Plume Agate Doublet

If you've been following me for a while, you know how much I adore natural mineral stones. I might even prefer them to some precious stones, despite their natural imperfections.

I am fascinated by how nature's processes create these wonders, with each piece being unique. Working with them has provided me with great insight into how craftsmen enhance their beauty.

These plume agate doublets are exquisitely crafted, and I want to share an overview of how they are made with you.

Plume Agate doublets are created with natural plume agates that are layered with resin or other composite materials that will create the desired contrast that highlights the natural and unique inclusions (the plumes) of the plume agate stone.

The choice of the natural plume agate should be thin and quite transparent. A backing is then layered and secured to the stone. Usually darker coloured backings will create a more dramatic effect. 

The stones are then grind to the desired shape and polished first with sand paper, followed by placing in a rock tumbler for several weeks untill the stone is smooth and vibrant. This process to enhance the depth of the agate stone and its plumes.
